The classic rarity symbols

Look at the bottom of most Pokémon cards and you will find a small symbol. A black circle means Common, a black diamond means Uncommon, and a black star means Rare. These have been the backbone of the rarity system since the beginning. A star with a holofoil card usually indicates a Holo Rare — same rarity tier, but with the shiny treatment.

Beyond the basics: modern rarities

Modern sets stack additional rarity tiers on top. You will see mechanic names like ex, V, VMAX, and VSTAR, which denote powerful special Pokémon that are usually printed as premium cards. Above those sit Ultra Rares (full-art versions), Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rares (the gorgeous full-art scenes collectors chase), and Secret Rares — cards numbered higher than the printed set total, often with gold or rainbow treatments.

Why "rare" doesn’t always mean "valuable"

This trips up every new collector: a modern "secret rare" from a set printed in the millions can be far more common than a humble vintage holo. Rarity symbols tell you the tier within a set, not the card’s value across the whole market. Value comes from demand, condition, artwork, and how many copies survive in high grade — not the symbol alone.

A Special Illustration Rare of a beloved Pokémon will command a premium; the same rarity tier for an unpopular Pokémon often will not. Always read rarity as one signal among several.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rarest Pokémon card rarity?+

In modern sets, Special Illustration Rares and Secret Rares (hyper/rainbow/gold rares numbered above the set total) are the top tiers. But "rarest" within a set does not automatically mean most valuable — demand and condition still decide price.

What do the card numbers above the set total mean?+

A card numbered higher than the printed set total (for example 238/191) is a "secret" card — a special or secret rare added beyond the main checklist. These are usually the chase cards of the set.
